Planting the ravine

In 2017 the Rhododendron Ravine was reopened to the public after being closed for decades. Now we have a whole new area for our volunteers to plant and maintain.

In 2019 the Friends of Dominion Brook Park hired Sagitta Landscape Solutions to develop a planting plan. The plan divides the Ravine area into 18 zones, each with a list of recommended plants suitable to the soil conditions and exposure of that zone. In 2020 the first specimens were purchased and planted in Zone 7.

This is a multi-year project that will be pursued as funds and time permit.  The goal is to re-establish the collection of rhododendrons and companion plants along the pathway loop that follows the brook.

Stonework in the Ravine

Stonework has been a defining feature of the Park since its establishment. In recent years the Friends of Dominion Brook Park Society has been adding new rock work and hosting workshops for those interested in learning the skills of stone construction.  The first one was to build the dry stone bridge.

New stone walls will retain the slopes and complete the stonework around the bridge.  In 2019 the Friends held a workshop with Rocks and Stone Inc. a local masonry firm. Over a weekend, ten volunteers built a stone wall on the south side of the bridge.

In 2021 a second workshop is planned to complete the wall and install a bench on the south side of the stone bridge.  Stay tuned for notices about the upcoming wall-building workshop.
