Platanus orientalis
oriental plane Tree
Planted in 1913
Source: Layritz Nursery (operated in Saanich from late 1800 – 1940s)
The Oriental Plane trees that grow in the Park were planted in 1913. The original plan was to plant a row of 50 Plane trees along an avenue through the farm. These planting plans were postponed with the onset of the war.
After the war, a Road of Remembrance along Shelbourne Street was proposed to honour fallen soldiers. Shelbourne Street had just been opened in 1916 to provide a north-south thoroughfare from Mount Doug to Victoria. London Plane trees were planted along the route, starting in 1921. The City of Victoria donated trees from its nursery. Layritz Nursery was one of the main local nursery suppliers to the City. The Farm agreed that its remaining trees on order with Layritz would go to the memorial. Around 600 trees were planted. You can see the last of the memorial trees still growing along north Shelbourne Street.
